The Great Empires of India: From Maurya to Mughal

Image
The Maurya Empire (322-185 BCE) was the first major historical Indian empire, and definitely the largest one created by an Indian dynasty. The empire arose as a consequence of state consolidation in northern India, which led to one state, Magadha, in today’s Bihar, dominating the Ganges plain. The empire was founded by Chandragupta Maurya, who overthrew the Nanda Empire with the help of his minister Chanakya, the author of the Arthashastra, a treatise on statecraft and politics. The empire expanded rapidly under Chandragupta and his successors, especially Ashoka, who is famous for his edicts promoting Buddhism and peace. The empire reached its peak under Ashoka, who controlled most of South Asia except the southernmost parts. The empire declined after Ashoka's death and was eventually overthrown by the Shunga dynasty in 185 BCE. The Gupta Empire (320-550 CE) is considered the golden age of classical Indian culture, as it witnessed a flourishing of art, lite...

India’s Killer Heat Wave

Image
India’s Killer Heat Wave The heat wave sweeping across South Asia has killed up to 2,000 people already. A respected think tank says it could be due to climate change This is the highest toll since 2003, when around 3,000 people had died within a week. At that time too, most of the deaths were in Andhra Pradesh. Meteorologists working for the governments of India and Pakistan ascribe the ongoing heat wave to winds blowing eastwards from the deserts of southern Baluchistan and adjoining areas of Iran. Their forecast is that the heat wave will continue at least till the end of the month. With throats parched and skins burning, few people have been venturing outdoors during the day unless they absolutely have to. As a result, the homeless have had the worst time of it – the three deaths in the Indian capital New Delhi ascribed to heat stroke so far have all been of homeless people. But hardly anyone in the subcontinent has been able to escape another effect of the hot dry winds blow...
